If Trees Could Talk!

If they could talk they just might impart a few of these statistics for stimulating conversation and stimulating conservation!
Studies have shown that hospital patients recover more quickly from surgery if they have a view of trees.
In the urban setting, people spend more time (and consequently more money) along tree-lined streets. If you've ever walked an unknown city, remember how trees in the distance pulled you like a magnet to discover what sights and scenes they sheltered.
Property values of houses with trees are 5%-20% higher than similar homes without trees.

Prune Now, Save Some Green
In North Texas, most trees in our landscapes can be pruned year-round. Pruning when your deciduous trees are without their leaves in the wintertime makes sense on several levels.
First off, a tree's overall structure is easier to ascertain when the branches are bare. Structural strength without the weight of foliage can be more readily analyzed. And speaking of the lack of foliage, our crews will take less time to prune and there will be less material to load up and recycle. Less time and labor on the job means a lower cost to you.
Well-maintained trees suffer less damage when winter winds blow and ice pellets coat branches, trunks, and leaves. A weight-reduction pruning may be the suggested plan of action from your Preservation Tree arborist. With the unpredictability of North Texas winters, its best to have your trees in shape for whatever Mother Nature has in store. Pruning during the tree's dormant season also sets the stage for enhanced health in the coming spring and summer of flourishing new growth and vigor.

240-year-old Maine Elm to Come Down
If you are catching this article after January 18, the mighty Elm tree that has graced a Maine town for nearly a quarter of a millenium is now resting vertically for the first time in its long life. Check out the Town of Yarmouth's webpage on Herbie - that's the name of the tree that has been under the loving care of a handlful of volunteers, chief among them one Frank Knight. Now 101, Mr. Knight started his ministrations for Herbie back in the 1950s. By his calculations, Herbie has survived 14 Dutch Elm Disease infestations, being nursed back to health each time by Mr. Knight.
Plans for the tree's wood will bring artists and citizens together to help make a positive out of losing such a living piece of history.

Root for Root Work - and no, we don't mean a hairdresser's dye job
The dormant season for trees is also an excellent time to address and correct any root problems with your trees. Girdling roots are of special concern. As they encircle the tree trunk, they can destablize the tree, affect its proper growth pattern, and eventually choke off the very life to the tree. Roots growing into foundations or affecting sidewalks and walkways also are best addressed during the tree's downtime in the winter months.

Full-Fledged Lab Debuts at Preservation Tree
With our move to our new Dallas digs late last year, we've been busy setting up our laboratory to better serve our clients and their variety of tree care needs. The lab is most instrumental in the process of creating our own Seasons by Preservation liquid compost extract product. Through continuous monitoring, we can assure abundant populations and diversity of beneficial soil-enhancing biology in our products. Additionally, we can accurately diagnose plant maladies and then provide the best organic response to keep your trees healthy.
